Panic Attacks and Ambien
Ambien is a sleeping drug. Like any other drug it does have some side-effects. Some people have been complaining that Ambien caused them severe panic attacks among other symptoms.
Some people can not tolerate the drug and experience some very nasty effects. To have an idea read this online user story:”I’ve been taking zolpidem for about 6 months. I started feeling ill-effects late every day: particularly difficulty in getting breath, hot flushes, short panic attacks, dizziness, nausea. I decided to reduce the amount of zolpidem from about 10mg per night to about 3mg. 3 nights ago I experienced the worst panic attack of my life. Things are confused for me, but I think this was soon after reducing the dose. Things have got very bad since then. When it’s bad, this is what happens. I feel detatched from everything around me, almost like I’m looking at a picture of things rather than being there. Visual perception is distorted – especially peripheral where things are flashy and unsteady. I have hot flushes. At times, I have extreme feelings of cold. Panic attacks are always near, and sometimes I fall into one. I try to tell myself its just a wave – I’ll get through it. Thank goodness, usually it does subside a little after a while. I walk around for ages with my girlfriend – it takes all my concentration to keep my mind. I feel like I’m loosing my mind, or going into a psychosis. Sometimes I think I’m going to die. If it sounds horrific, it is. Utterly terrifying. From looking around, I know not everyone has this sort of reaction to ambien (zolpidem). I also know some have found it very tough to get off. But has anyone had such severe reaction? To this or a benzo? I’d love to hear from you. I just want to know there’s an explanation, coz I really can’t be sure. Serepax is all that allows me to sit here and write, now. Steve” You can read the original story here.
Well, if you are taking Ambien(Zolpiderm) and you have been experiencing panic attacks, severe anxiety attacks or hallucinations, the best thing for you is to go to your doctor and try reduce the dose until you get off of it. Some people reported very bad panic attacks if they had stopped it suddenly.
Or you could try to change it with an alternative sleeping aid such as NightCalm.
